Township History

Liberty Township, one of the premiere suburban locations in Central Ohio, was officially founded in 1808.  Townships are recognized as one of America's first forms of government, being able to accomplish more for less tax dollars than any other form of local government.

Liberty Township covers nearly 25 square miles in Delaware County, one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.  The appeal of Liberty Township is its charming semi-rural location between the scenic Olentangy and Scioto Rivers with close proximity to our state’s capital, Port Columbus International Airport, the Ohio State University, Columbus State Community College and two major league athletic teams.  Just beyond the boundaries of Liberty Township is Muirfield Village Golf Club, home of Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Golf Tournament.  Nearby amenities include several top-rated hospitals, two large shopping malls, several movie theaters and fine dining.

The people of Liberty Township enjoy a mostly residential community with complimentary commerce districts, parks, expanding biking/walking paths and one of the top public school districts in Ohio.  Liberty Township is home to the Olentangy Caverns and the nationally-recognized Columbus Zoo. It also has four local golf courses (two public and two private) a recreation center and community pool.  We also encompass the historic city of Powell, famous for its many quaint antique shops.

Liberty Township provides a fire department, EMS, parks department, road maintenance and planning and zoning.  The government of Liberty Township includes three township trustees and a fiscal officer, who are elected to serve four-year terms.  There are also several boards and committees that fulfill various roles on behalf of the township.  In 2007, the administrator’s position was increased from part time to full time to keep up with the growing community.

The current members of the Board of Trustees are:

Mr. Curt Sybert
